In today’s digital age, where LED displays and electronic signage dominate cityscapes, there’s still something undeniably captivating about the nostalgic glow of a classic neon sign. For more than a century, Frank Balton Signs has been a trusted name in signage craftsmanship—and restoring neon is a part of our legacy we take seriously.

Whether it’s a weathered bar sign tucked away in Midtown Memphis or a vintage theater marquee in need of attention, neon restoration allows us to preserve local history and revive stories worth telling.

Why Neon Still Matters

Neon signs are more than just advertisements—they’re time capsules. Each one reflects the design sensibilities, materials, and spirit of a specific era. Whether it’s a long-forgotten diner, a neighborhood bar, or a decades-old car dealership, these signs tell stories that resonate across generations.

At Frank Balton Signs, we believe restoring neon is about more than re-lighting tubes. It’s about:

  • Preserving a unique form of American craftsmanship
  • Retaining the personality and identity of a business
  • Bridging past and present through timeless design
  • Keeping the handmade artistry of neon alive for future generations

“Restoring a neon sign is like breathing life back into a character in Memphis’ visual history.”

We consider it a privilege to help keep that glow alive.

The Neon Sign Restoration Process

Restoring a classic neon sign requires equal parts engineering and artistry. No two projects are alike, but the goal is always the same: return the sign to its original brilliance while improving its safety and longevity.

Here’s how we do it:

1. Assessment and Historical Research

We begin with a thorough inspection of the sign’s structural integrity, paint condition, electrical components, and neon tubing. If possible, we pull historic photos or blueprints to maintain design accuracy. Understanding the original craftsmanship helps us honor it.

2. Disassembly and Cleaning

The sign is carefully dismantled so each element can be cleaned and restored. Decades of grime, oxidation, and corrosion are removed using specialized solutions, exposing the original finishes and materials beneath.

3. Glass Tube Replacement or Repair

Using time-honored techniques, we hand-bend new neon tubes to match the original shapes. In some cases, intact tubes are carefully cleaned and resealed, allowing us to preserve portions of the original neon work.

4. Electrical System Upgrade

Outdated and potentially dangerous wiring is replaced with modern components. We use safe, efficient neon transformers that maintain the same warm glow while improving energy performance and safety.

5. Surface Refinishing and Paint Matching

The frame, cabinet, and background surfaces are sanded, repaired, and repainted. When possible, we match the original paint scheme with custom-mixed, weather-resistant coatings that honor the sign’s historic character.

6. Reinstallation or Display Prep

Once restored, the sign is tested, transported, and reinstalled with care. Some clients choose to preserve their neon signs as indoor decor or historical display pieces—others proudly light them up on the original facade.

Project Spotlight: Bayou Bar & Grill, Memphis

We recently had the honor of restoring the iconic neon sign from Bayou Bar & Grill, a Memphis staple in the Overton Square area since 1987. Known for its lively atmosphere and Cajun flair, the Bayou’s red script sign had become a local landmark.

After years of exposure to rain, heat, and UV rays, the original tubes were failing and the paint had faded. Still, the bones were solid.

Our Work Included:

  • Preserving the original letterforms and layout
  • Hand-bending fresh neon tubing in bright red
  • Repainting the frame and backing to match the original colorway
  • Installing new, UL-rated transformers and wiring for safety
  • Final testing and reinstallation on-site

Now fully restored, the Bayou sign glows once again—lighting up the sidewalk with the same warmth and charm it offered nearly 40 years ago.

Neon Signs vs. Modern Alternatives

We get asked this all the time: Why not just switch to LED? While LEDs are incredibly efficient and flexible, neon offers something that’s hard to replicate:

  • A continuous glow with no hot spots
  • Custom tube shapes and hand-bent artistry
  • Color vibrancy and saturation that LEDs can’t match
  • A nostalgic aesthetic that connects emotionally with viewers

Neon restoration isn’t always the cheapest option, but for the right brand or business, it’s the most memorable.

A Note on Historic Preservation

Neon signs are often tied to buildings or neighborhoods under historic protection. We frequently coordinate with:

  • Memphis Landmarks Commission
  • Downtown Memphis Commission Design Review Board
  • Neighborhood associations (e.g., Cooper-Young, Evergreen)

We also reference national guidelines, including this resource from the National Park Service on preserving historic signs.

If your sign falls under preservation guidelines, we help with design mockups, board approvals, and code compliance.

When to Consider Neon Sign Restoration

Wondering if your old sign is worth restoring? Here are a few good signs it’s time:

  • The neon flickers or no longer lights
  • The colors have faded or look patchy
  • The glass is cracked or missing
  • The paint is peeling or rusted
  • You’ve been told to remove or replace it for code reasons

In most cases, restoration is more cost-effective than a full rebuild—and much more authentic.

Restoring neon signs is about more than tubes and transformers—it’s about honoring the businesses, families, and communities they’ve represented for decades.
